[Movie Review] Drishyam (Malayalam) : Spellbinding

Amongst my countless new year resolutions, the seemingly easier one to achieve is “to watch only movies that are worth my money and more importantly my time". So, the first movie of the year was Drishyam. After hearing some good stuff about the movie through twitter, I decided to give it a shot.

Drishyam was absolutely brilliant. It's so heartwarming to see such a finely crafted drama-thriller movie from India, devoid of logical loopholes and the traditional Indian-movie-masala mix. The story is solid and intelligently executed with the plots points being smartly tied to form a perfect garland.

The story is about a middle class family dealing with an unexpected event in their life. George Kutty (Mohanlal), a cable-operator, lives with this wife Rani (Meena) and his two daughters. He represents the standard middle class middle aged father dealing with the usual problems in life - money, teenage-kids, business etc.  He is street smart and most of his knowledge and decisions are sourced through the umpteen number of movies he watches in his office. And then something happens that throws his and his family’s life out of gear. How he smartly manages it forms the crux of the story. It will be a crime to let out any more part of the plot. But I can assure you that you wouldn't want to blink during the movie for missing something important.

I'm not going into the technical details such as music, cinematography etc. They adequately support the story  without intruding the flow. The strengths are the story and screenplay, the elements most Indian movies tend to ignore. The cast is brilliant. Even the small characters do their part well.

Go watch Drishyam if you want to see a really good movie. I applauded at the end of the movie and I wasn’t the only one.

P.S: This was my first Malayalam movie in the cinemas and I watched it without subtitles. For someone whose mother tongue is Tamil, Malayalam is easier to understand. I found it a bit difficult at the start of the movie, but was quite comfortable as the movie progressed.

  1. Dear Thyagarajan - found this post while looking for Drishyam's subtitles online. Was going to watch it in a theatre and wanted to keep the subtitle file for ready reference. Honestly its the postscript, reading which I was relieved. Shared the same experience -a Tamilian's first Malayalam movie on the big screen. For the first 15 minutes, I almost regretted my decision coz I couldn't understand the dialogues of such an interesting film. But few minutes later, nothing mattered! Awesome movie! Wanted to thank you for the reassurance :-)

  2. I’m From Tamil Nadu, I like Malayalam Movies very much, in contrast I heard many Malayalam people like VIJAY, AJITH, SURYA, ALLU ARJUN. Tollywood is completely opposite to molly wood, whereas kolly wood is mixture of both the tolly wood and molly wood. Movies Made by Malayalam Industries are heart warming and life oriented, where you can at least learn something for your Life. I wish People from Malayalam film industry release their movies in Tamil with subtitles so that it will reach wider audience. Because artistic work should reach more people in the world. I used to read all the latest Kerala News in Malayalam from this site, check it , would be useful.
