So, I read the The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Hmph. :-| The book has honorable intentions of conveying a beautiful message - “Go after your dreams” – which is the philosophy that I strictly adhere to in all aspects of my life (exceptions being matters related to the fairer sex).
The Alchemist is the tale of a young shepherd who follows his dreams (or rather destiny) of finding a treasure. He learns about the treasure from an Oracle and decides that finding the treasure is his destiny and dream (somebody, please explain me how!). After a couple of years, he eventually ends up finding the treasure with the help of The Alchemist, the one with the power to turn lead into gold.
I have no complains with the theme - it bubbles with optimism. But the path taken to get to the treasure is not so inspiring and it feels quite ridiculous at times. Except for a year when the shepherd works hard to continue is journey, there is no other hardship he encounters on the way. There is a lot of gibberish about spirituality, good and bad omens, the language of the Universe, some indirect stuff about God etc. The book almost always teeters on the edge of the existence of a supernatural power (a quick reading on the Paulo Coelho revealed that he has a long relationship with the Church).
The book is readable though. It you consider it to be a fantasy novel, it is a quick and an interesting read. If you believe in God, this book may impress you.
The Alchemist is considered to be one of the most inspirational books of the modern times. Quite understandable, as atheists like me are still not the majority.
