Foreign movies that you shouldn't miss

Don't ever get into the shell of watching movies in your regional language, Bollywood or Hollywood movies. An innumerable number of great movies are made by the less fortunate movie industries. Here are some of the foreign movies that I loved. Will post more as and when I watch them.

This academy award winning film is about an ex-detective who tries to write a book on his experiences of solving a rape-murder that happened 20 years ago. The narration alters between past and present and drives strongly what true love is capable of doing. Strong really strong! It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie with such clarity in screenplay in spite of several subplots. It is so wonderfully directed that you never feel like watching a movie. Kudos to the cinematographer (for simple yet gorgeous cinematography) and the music director (for a brilliant soundtrack). Usually, Academy gifts the Oscar for Best Foreign feature film to those movies that have are motivated by some political event. But this one is an exception.

A classic crime drama set in the suburbs of Brazil that captures the life of two protagonists on either side of the law. The movie is not for the weak-hearted as it is loaded with violence and it indeed is a disturbing sight to watch some casual killing. Lots of similarities to Slumdog millionaire but much much better than that. The narration style is excellent and screenplay keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout the movie. The editing work is one of the best you'll ever see in a foreign movie.

Ha! One of my all time favorites. This movie is a masterpiece from Alfonso Cuarón. Being controversial at its time for its brazen and audacious portrayal of sexuality, the films is about coming of the age story of a couple of teenagers. Two guys in search of fun, elope on an adventure with a single woman who is much elderly to them. They go in search on a non-existent beach. The movie so subtly and elegantly portrays how these two cope up with jealousy. So hot and fun! Recommended not to watch it with your family which is a double bonus :-)

A young physics professor takes on a road trip across Europe to meet his love of his life. A girl, who is broke and has a crush on this prof, tags along. And the movie is all about their travel from Germany to Turkey. A short, cute and an enjoyable film.

Chronicles the road trip of Che Guevara while he was young. The first half of the movie is phenomenal - captures the essence of Latin America beautifully. However, the later half is a bit preachy and you’ll see less of the ‘motorcycle’. Nevertheless, a good movie to watch.

  2. Here is my foreign movie list that I enjoyed the most and recommend too. I can't believe how I missed "secret eyes". Probably my rental store didn't bring it up. How do you watch all these movies BTW? Netflix?

  3. @sriram,
    will sure try to get hold of it.

    @tintinban,
    nice list bro. I had already watched Amelie and Malena in that list. Amelie is cool but not sure about Malena though (could watch for Bellucci:P). Downfall is the next one on my list.

    There is only one way you can watch these movies here and I'm not going to name it :-)

  4. Have seen only 'Secret in their eyes' out of 5 movies. I found the investigator's love story to be more gripping than the widowed man's story !
