Bloody movies!

We are in a era of movie making where a good movie almost always has a violent or a bloody gore scene that makes us squirm in our seats or exclaim 'oh bloody shit!'. Seems like directors are running out of ideas. In their constant urge to make realistic movies, they are blinded by the fact that blood and gore will enhance the realism of their movies.

Movies either use violence to make audience happy or to make them develop the feeling of hatred towards barbarism.

Recently, lot of movies have been falling into the first category (the fun one!). Tarentino started the cult with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp fiction. Ever since Pulp Fiction became a phenomenon, blood & gore has been the center stage of several films such as Fightclub, 300, Kill bill (1,2), SinCity etc . It would be nothing short of disturbing to say that excessive violence in these movies excites the audience. I still remember people shouting in glee in a theater when I watching the movie 300. Tarentino's latest flick Inglorious Basterds seems to have a lot of violence as well and everybody terms it a fun ride!

The second category of movies are rare. They make you hate violence. And they are made by good directors..obviously. Speilberg's use of blood in Schindler's list and Saving Private Ryan will leave you cold and will reiterate the fact that violence is painful. The same is the case with movies by Coen Brothers and Scorcesse. No country for Old Men and the Departed shows a lot of blood, but it is hard and scary. Passion of Christ is another good example (people cried in the theaters).

There is actually a third category which wants to take a middle path, but unfortunately they only end up in disgusting me. Movies like Hostel, Saw have too much gore (innovatively violent scenes) and at the same time, they try to scare you. They end up leaving you feel sick to the mouth. I would categorize them as porn(extremity of sadism & violence).

Now which one do I watch among these? It is the movies in the second category that impresses me the most. Violence is something to be hated and not glorified. And Spielberg, Coen brothers, Scorcesse all make sure that it is the case so. I do watch the first kind, only if it has a innovative story line. Tarentino is one of my favorites. He is kind of director who has fun directing movies. Also, I would be absolutely honest in saying that I had enjoyed 300 immensely. It was a visually stunning movie with stylished action scenes (or rather bloody scenes). I've stopped watching the third kind and I just hate them.

Gladly, Pixars and DreamWorks are doing a fantastic job with all their animation movies. I don't miss any of them even if they are mediocre. It is one hell of a break away from the mainstream movies which claim to be realistic.

Gyan : Do not forget that man is basically an animal and a carnivore too. He internally has this bloody thirst that is never satiated. Over the span of several millions of years, he has learnt to be civilized (and sometimes vegetarian too!) and has been able supress his animal instincts significantly. We can only hope that he gets better as we go forward. But he is also growing at an alarming rate and his civic sense is possibly not sustainable. He will someday return to his barbaric best when he has to fight for his survival and what has left of this earth. Luckily, that day is at least a few million years away and the earth would probably be long destroyed by some nuclear holocaust :)

  1. I am glad that you have the same opinion and taste about different categories of Bloody movies. Category-2 is my favorite as well.

Just to give another chance to Quintin, I tried "Inglorious". Although he changed his style from his typical movies, he carried forward the violence and comedy parts of his movie making style and others were left behind. Unfortunately that happened to be the best part of the movie and the rest yawn making. The movie is hit on box-office and critically acclaimed, but not in my list.

  2. Delli, As u said, type 2 movies are there that use blood and gory images to make us hate war and violence. But there are movies which make use of neither or at least minimally and yet take their messages across. Write about them in your next blog.

  3. Dei, this blog was totally off the track from your usual review stuffs. I think MBA is doing its job. you have become analytical.

As per me if blood & gore is presented in form, I stay away from them.
