Munich is a movie about Operation Wrath of God carried out by an elite team of Mossad agents(Israel) to kill the members of Black September who masterminded the Munich Olympic massacre in 1972. Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest movie makers of all times and he has proven once more, why is it so!
The movie starts with the infamous killing of the Israeli athletes during Munich Olympics in 1972. And then the Israeli authorities decide to avenge their death. A Mossad agent Avner(Eric bana) is sent out on a mission to kill all the eleven members who were involved both directly and indirectly in the Munich Massacre. He recruits a team for this task and what follows is the epitome of movie making.
The movie grows on you with each assassination. The planning of every murder becomes more mature as the Mossad team start assassinating the member of Black September. The movie shed lights on both the sides of tale. The scene where Avner and his Palestine counterpart meet is engrossing and dialogues are sharp. After 6 of the 11 Palestine targets assassinated, Avner's starts to lose his men one by one. He reaches a point where he cannot continue and he quits.

Such is the visual style, that we find ourselves traveling back to Europe in early 70s. Excellent cinematography and editing work keeps up the tempo of the movie consistently and captivates us through out.
All the actors in the movie have performed well. Eric Bana has performed wonderfully. The scene where he checks his entire hotel room for hidden explosives is just an example. Geoffrey Rush exhibits his usual charm.
The movie finally concludes saying 'An eye for an eye will leave the entire world blind'. It is still a puzzle that this movie did not bag any academy award. I would have recommended for the best director and cinematography. Anyways, a great movie which you wouldn't want to miss.

ReplyDeleteWell, Munich was a pretty good movie.. But, when compared to the other Oscar contenders, it was not great.. Did u watch Crash? It was a greatly made movie.. The problem with Munich is that you had to wait for it to grow on you.. It just does not happen immediately.. I just could not get myself to sit thru the first 15 mins.. Later when his team starts working it was good.. I esp liked the telephone killing where they suddenly see the kid picking the phone..
ReplyDeleteActually watched it quite a long time back so cant recall it properly.. And the ending was quite good..
@r.e.b.e.l,
ReplyDeleteYep. I accept that Crash was a better movie than Munich. But IMO, Crash faltered at saying what it wanted to convey. Crash got the best picture award, because it was a boldly made movie. I've not seen Brokeback mountain, but many of them felt that it should have won the academy.
As far as Munich is concerned, its attention to minute details was the most impressive part.
